Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods which helps to maximise the true expression of terroir, and in 2019 Doña Paula was certified as a sustainably managed winery by Bodegas de Argentina. Warm temperatures during spring resulted in early bud break and early flowering. However, the combination of two cold springs in succession in the previous years (2015/16) has resulted in smaller clusters forming in 2017. Excellent weather conditions during the ripening period accelerated the harvest and ensured the grapes were in perfect health when picked. The 2017 vintage will be remembered for its superb quality, flavour concentration and low volume.

The grapes were sourced from the El Alto vineyard in Ugarteche, Luján de Cuyo. The estate is located at 1,050 metres above sea level, where the climate typically presents warm days and cool nights, with an average temperature variation of 14°C. This diurnal temperature variation encourages a long ripening period, producing a greater concentration of flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The soils are predominantly clay loam, but have poor profiles resulting from a mixture of pebbles, gravel and clay. Irrigated by a drip system, the vines are cultivated using an espalier training method and the vineyards are managed sustainably.

The grapes were hand-picked towards the end of March when they had reached optimal maturity. Cool pre-fermentation maceration took place preserving the primary fruit aromas. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 25 to 28°C, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine was made in an unoaked style showcasing the purity of fruit in this distinctive blend.

An intense, complex and vibrant array of fresh fruit aromas are displayed in this stunning Argentinian blend. Wild berry notes come from the Malbec, cherry flavours from the Pinot Noir and the Bonarda imparts juicy layers of blackberry and redcurrant. A voluminous palate with silky tannins leads to a long and pleasant finish. Perfect with a juicy pan-fried steak and hand-cut chips.
