Within Beaujolais there are 10 crus-du-beaujolais. Within the 10 crus, Morgon and Moulin-A-Vent stand out as the richest and darkest examples of premier Gamay. Within Morgon, Côte du Py with it’s iconic solitary oak tree stands out as the plot of vines that produces the richest and darkest examples of Gamay. Laurent Gauthier is a Beaujolais through and through - born in 1965 in Morgon to parents who were both vintners, Laurent began producing wine himself before he turned 20. He now runs Domaine Laurent Gauthier (which has been operating since 1834 under the Domaine Famille Gauthier ident) with his son Jason as a fully organic production.

This Morgon is tremendous, with a nose full of black cherry, crushed blackberry, with just a touch of violet and spice. On the palate a smoky flavour envelops the fruit, with an almost earthy quality. Rich and velvety, with excellent tannin structure - this is a wine to drink now, or keep for up to another 5 years. A true example of just how well the little sibling of Beaujolais can stand up to the big brother of Burgundy.
